We’ve been making quality pressed apple juice at Cawston Press since 1986 and our range now includes six award-winning, beautifully-balanced blends.
Our passion for apple juice is as strong today as it was when we first started. With our aim being to create the highest quality product possible, we believe our juice is now the best we’ve ever made.
Methods of pressing have changed over the last 25 years and new technology means we can now gently press our apples so that we have the purest juice with a fresh, clean taste. A little different from our early days when we used to see a lot of sediment in our juices.
Packaging has also changed during this time and we now use Tetra cartons which are far better for the environment as well as having the ability to seal in the great flavour of the juice without any risk of the juice deteriorating. We used to use glass bottles which had to be hot filled, which meant we had to heat our juice to a really high temperature whereas nowadays we are able to gently pasteurise it.
Stephen Unwin our Managing Director is responsible for creating our award-winning blends. He has a love and knowledge for apples which comes from working in the apple industry for over twenty years.
The recipe we use for our Apple Juice was created by Stephen from an understanding of what makes the perfect juice. He continues to work on new blends and we have a few in the pipeline right now – so do look out for new flavours in the coming months.

The apple is the original fruit. We believe that its benefits go beyond its most immediate incarnation, the raw apple. So we use all our skills and imagination to preserve the apple in all its glories so that you can enjoy it conveniently – all year round.
To get the best juice from an apple it should be left to ripen naturally on the tree. That’s why we only harvest our apples once they are ready, so they are brimming with flavour.
At harvest time we pick the finest fruit and then press it immediately, artfully combining different varieties to create beautifully-balanced blends. The result is 100% natural, cloudy apple juice bursting with healthy goodness.
We make our juice with Cox's Orange Pippin, Bramley, Jonagold, Gala, Golden Delicious and Braeburn.
Every carton of Cawston Press has 10 whole apples pressed into it.
Having picked our apples at the peak of their ripeness we promptly press the majority the same day and make sure any left are all pressed within 48 hours. A freshly picked apple has a great flavour and for us it’s all about capturing that.
A lot of apples used for juice are held in cold storage until they are needed, this can be anything from a few weeks to a few months. Fruit continues to ripen once you pick it so some apple juice makers choose to pick their fruit early so that it ripens at a slower speed in storage. This means the fruit never gets that wonderful tree ripened flavour.
Once we’ve pressed our apples we gently pasteurise the juice before storing in air tight containers which keep is as fresh as the day it was pressed.

Stephen Unwin our Managing Director not only keeps an eye on the business side of things at Cawton Press, he is also responsible for creating our award-winning blends. He has a love and knowledge for apples which comes from working in the apple industry for over twenty years. When he’s not at the office he can be found at his home is Suffolk, which is surrounded by beautiful apple orchards.
The recipe we use for our Apple Juice was created by Stephen from an understanding of what makes the perfect juice. It is a balancing act, a combination of sweetness, bite and depth of flavour.
We use English Bramley for its bite, Cox Orange Pippin for depth of flavour and Jonagold, Braeburn, Golden Delicious and Gala for their refreshing sweetness. The result is a beautifully-balanced juice that we’re very proud of.
Over the years we’ve scooped several awards for our Juices, including the Quality Food Award 2008 and The Grocer Branded Excellence Award 2009. Not only that we often come top in magazine taste tests.
We are so sure we have a great juice that we recently did a taste test comparing us against the best selling chilled apple juice brand. We trumped them on everything and came out scoring higher on flavour, aroma, appearance and mouth feel.
Our job doesn’t end with having created a lovely juice; we need to make sure it gets to you as fresh as the day it was pressed. We gently pasteurise the juice before pouring it into special TetraPak cartons, sealing in the goodness.
We could use plastic or glass bottles to hold our juice but we think TetraPak cartons offer us the best choice. Our aim is to get our juice to you tasting the very best it can and in order to do that it needs to be totally sealed from air and light so that it stays completely fresh.
Juice that you find in glass and plastic bottles starts degrading as soon at it's bottled, which means it has a limited shelf life and has to be kept cold or have preservatives added. You can keep our juice in a cupboard rather than the fridge because our cartons are totally airtight so it stays fresh until you open it. You then simply pop it in the fridge so you can drink it chilled.
The majority of local councils (86%) now recycle TetraPakcartons and over 34% operate kerbside collection of TetraPak cartons makingit even easier for you to be green. If you’re not sure if your does, visit tetrapakrecycling.co.uk and use their map to see if your council is one of those that does.
