WellKid® Omega-3 because you want the very best start for your kids |
High purity Omega-3 & Vitamin D3 Fatty acids and brain function in kids
There's a reason why fish is known as “brain food”! Omega-3 fatty acids
are required for healthy brain development, optimal brain function and
cell signalling (when nerve cells communicate with each other).
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is found in high concentrations in the gray
matter of the brain and is a structural Omega-3 and therefore essential
during pregnancy and early infancy. Whilst DHA still remains important
in childhood, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) then takes over as a
functional Omega-3 that ensures healthy brain communication and
function, as well as blood flow and performance, hence the higher level for EPA than DHA found within WellKid® Omega-3 Softburst for the 4-12 year age group.
Eye health & Omega-3
Recent research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids
play an important structural and functional role in the retina. Adequate
levels of DHA must be maintained in the retina for it to function
properly and to help maintain good visual acuity in children.
Healthy joints, bones and teeth
As well as the benefits of Omega-3 for healthy joint and bone development, each WellKid®
Omega-3 Softburst capsule provides the full RDA of Vitamin D3 (5mcg /
200 IU). This is present in the form of high quality pharmaceutical
grade vitamin D3 in the preferred, more active cholecalciferol form as
found in the body. Vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium
needed to support the health of rapidly growing bones and teeth.
The growing importance of Vitamin D3
Vitamin D plays a truly remarkable role in the body and is
essential for all round good health. It is not only vital for helping
keep strong bones in rapidly growing children, but is now known for its
role in the immune system and heart health.
Vitamin D has been found to influence all 36 organ
tissues in the body and new research shows that optimum intake levels of
vitamin D may be far higher than previously thought.
As well as bone health, vitamin D3 also helps maintain all round good health including:
• Brain & mood,
• Immune system,
• Cardio-vascular function
Vitamin D is synthesized by the body on exposure to sunlight,
however many parents are now following health advice to avoid too much
sun exposure and be extra careful with children’s delicate skin, often
using high SPF sun creams, which reduces vitamin D levels in the body.
It is therefore especially important to make sure children are having a nutritional safeguard such as WellKid® Softburst which includes their full RDA of vitamin D3.
Vitamin D in the diet
Vitamin D is only naturally present in a limited
number of foods (e.g. oily fish such as herring, sardines, fish liver
oils, eggs, butter), which may be foods that are difficult to get
children to eat regularly. Because vitamin D is fat soluble, advice to
eat lower fat diets, and the raising concern about childhood obesity may
contribute to reduced intakes from foods rich in Vitamin D and hence
dietary supplementation may be recommended.
With extra Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin and is particularly important to help maintain healthy:
• Skin.
• Blood formation.
• Heart and circulation.
• Eye health.
Vitamin E’s antioxidant properties mean that is
also helps to protect the omega-3 oil itself, and so its inclusion
provides a dual benefit in WellKid Omega-3.
Sustainable fisheries
The Omega-3 oil used in WellKid®
Omega-3 Softburst is composed of high quality triglycerides, sourced
from small fatty fish including: sardines, lake trout and mackerel.
